The Wednesday before Memorial Day Weekend, Jesse took our trusty steed to Freeport, Long Island where he picked up the canoe that his aunt and uncle gifted us. He then drove it to the house (avoiding driving back through NYC) and, by himself, managed to get the canoe off the car, around to our basement door, and maneuvered onto two saw horses set up in the basement. The canoe is large, taking up most of the length of the basement, meaning Jesse really had to finagle it in.
I came up on the train the following day, my first use of public transport to Port Jervis, and it was perfectly pleasant! We grabbed dinner in Port Jervis then headed home.
Friday we cleaned out the small shed which was packed with junk. We pulled everything out and then demo’d the two bathroom vanities and multiple extra kitchen cabinets that we found. We loaded these into the car on Saturday morning and took our first trip to the dump, which took our full car’s worth of debris for $25. There’s still plenty left, and we haven’t even begun to clean out the small house (still have to figure out what we’ll call the mini-house: the Garden Shop, the Tiny House, etc.).
Friday we also headed to Lowes to pick up gardening supplies and plants. We did some damage, and got some lovely pots and plants. One red flowing plant touts that it attracts humming birds and low and behold, I saw a hummingbird hovering outside of our kitchen window later in the day! Our first hummingbird sighting!
Speaking of birds — on Friday morning early I walked down to the lake and saw a bald eagle looking for some fish breakfast, flying over the lake. On Friday evening we dined at the Heron in Naroowsburg (anchovy on buttered toast and bone marrow and salmon ramen, all so good!) and sat at an outside table overlooking the Delaware, where we spotted another bald eagle!
Saturday we hit up the Barryville farmer’s market which was a lot of fun. We got good breads, cheeses, and meats to enjoy. When we got home, we decided to build a fire outside and take care of some of the fallen sticks and limbs in the yard. While everything was of course very wet, we learned that the cut logs under a blue tarp on the property are still nice and dry so we used those to get the party started. And it worked great! We created a circle of rocks for the fire and then Jesse coaxed and fed that fire for hours, until we called it a night around 8:30pm.
